Sharing Valentine's Day with your child

There may be more than one special someone you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day with this year; your child! To start a Valentine’s Day tradition with your child, plan a day of baking and making valentine gifts together.

Have your child pick out a few cookie and candy recipes from one of your cookbooks. Make sure you get all the ingredients ahead of time so you can have a fun day of making these goodies together.

Once baked and cooled, put a small handful of these cookies and candies in little baggies, and tie them up with red, pink or purple ribbons. Let your child give these out as valentine gifts to his or her friends, family members or neighbors.

Make some valentine cards with your child to go with the baggies. These valentines can be store-bought or you can make them together out of colorful construction paper, red and white wrapping paper, or even newspaper comics.

If you want to give your child a Valentine’s Day gift to remember, this special day together could be it! Or rather than candy, opt to buy him or her something memorable, such as a small piece of jewelry, a nice picture for their wall or their favorite book in hardcover. Or you can surprise your child with tickets to a movie or play. Promise (and keep your promise) to make plans for your next special day together.

In order to be able to share Valentine’s Day with your child but also have that special day with your spouse or significant other, spend the day of baking and making valentines on the weekend before Valentine’s Day. That way you have February 14 th to be with your spouse and get a sitter for the night!

Making time for these days together will create memories that your child will always remember. Start this tradition of sharing Valentine’s Day with your child to enjoy and continue throughout the years.
